The Swiss Alps are without a doubt one of the best destinations when it comes to picturesque views and European getaways. However, they are not only good for those looking to test themselves on the ski slopes – the alps are also home to some of Switzerland and even Europe’s greatest driving roads.
From the Furka pass to the San Bernardino pass. Car lovers and road trip enthusiasts alike are bound to love what’s on offer as they speed their way through the scenic mountain roads.

Furka Pass
Fans of James Bond will be familiar with this famous road after it featured prominently in 1964’s ‘Goldfinger’. One of the most commended roads on the planet going from Oberwald to Hospental, it is a must for anyone looking to road trip through the Swiss Alps.
Located in south-central Switzerland with an elevation of 2429 m, this 35km road was originally built for military purposes but the winding roads and tight corners now offer car enthusiasts the chance to show off their driving skills while passing through the picturesque mountain scenery.
It’s usually open June to October.
It’s located between Uri and Valais in Switzerland.

Susten Pass
Going from Wassen to Innertkirchen in the Bernese Highlands, this mountain pass is considered by some to exceed the Furka Pass for driving thrills.
Reaching an elevation of 2260 m (7414 ft), the 30-mile long road offers countless photo opportunities that make it clear why the Alps are a paradise for car lovers – no trip to Switzerland is complete without visiting the Susten.
It’s usually open early June until late October.

San Bernardino Pass
For any petrolhead looking to travel between Switzerland and Italy, look no further.
At 2066m in elevation, the San Bernardino pass connects the Hinterrhein and the Mesolcina valleys between Thusis and Bellinzona, this is the definitive pilgrimage that links the two countries and with smooth, highly paved roads, it is a popular destination that vintage car owners especially will admire.
The 30km stretch of road contains over 40 hairpin turns that will undoubtedly thrill drivers of all experience.
It closes during winter and is usually open June to October.
It connects Thusis and Bellinzona.
Maloja Pass
Located in Bregaglia at an elevation of 1815m, this steep and twisty road doesn’t offer anything particularly unique to the other mountain passes in Switzerland. But the road just under 24km long does have the added bonus of giving visitors fantastic views of Lake Sils and Lake Silvaplana that will only enhance your experience.
All year round but check for frequent road closures.

Stausee Mattmark
Perhaps a slightly different entry onto the list, this gorgeous, sweeping run in the Saas Valley will take you on a 7.3km ascent that leads right up to the imposing Mattmark Dam.
At an elevation of 2197m, the best part of the journey begins in the final few kilometres when the road gets steeper and the dam comes into sight.
