Canada’s Rocky Mountain Self-Drive
Calgary to Vancouver Island. The Icefields Parkway, the Pacific Coast, and the drive of a lifetime.
14 Nights · 2 Provinces · From £3,200pp
The drive of a lifetime. Fourteen nights, two provinces, one hire car — and a route that doesn’t let up from the moment you leave Calgary. The Canadian Rockies to the Pacific Coast is one of the world’s great road trips: a single continuous journey from the heart of the mountains to the edge of the ocean, with no doubling back and no transfers.
You head west from Calgary into Banff, then north along the Icefields Parkway — 230 kilometres of National Park road past glaciers, waterfalls and peaks that seem to grow taller the further you go. Lake Louise stops you in your tracks, the Athabasca Glacier is a genuine once-in-a-lifetime experience, and Jasper at the far end is quieter and wilder than anything that came before it.
From Jasper the trip turns west, descending through British Columbia toward the coast. The landscape shifts completely — mountains giving way to wide river valleys, dense forest and eventually the salt air of the Pacific. Vancouver earns a couple of nights: mountains behind it, ocean in front, and a food scene that makes the most of its position at the meeting point of Pacific, Asian and Canadian influences.
The trip ends on Vancouver Island, reached by BC Ferries — a sailing that’s an experience in itself. Victoria is the final stop: unhurried, harbour-front and a satisfying place to finish a journey of this scale before flying home.
