Norwegian Fjords
Nine nights among the fjords, mountains, and coastal roads of western Norway. Bergen northward.
10 days / 9 nights · From £1,799 per car based on two sharing
The first time you see a Norwegian fjord from the road — the water impossibly still, the mountains rising vertically on both sides, a waterfall dropping from somewhere you can’t quite see — something in your brain recalibrates. It doesn’t look real. The scale is wrong. And then you drive around the next bend and there’s another one. Norway does this to you for nine straight days.
You’ll fly into Bergen and pick up a car, then head north along the coast. Hardangerfjord, Sognefjord, Geirangerfjord — each one bigger and more dramatic than the last. Trollstigen, the mountain road with eleven hairpins and a waterfall that crashes over the road itself. The Atlantic Ocean Road, which hops between islands on a series of bridges that look like they’re leaping out of the sea. Norwegian Scenic Routes have turned the rest stops and viewpoints into architectural experiences in their own right — a toilet block with a better view than most hotel rooms.
Nine nights is enough to cover the western fjords and the mountain interior before looping back to Bergen. The driving is unlike anywhere else — tunnels through mountains, ferries across fjords, single-track roads along cliff edges. It’s further and more expensive than the European trips, but the people who’ve done it say the same thing: it’s the most beautiful place they’ve ever driven.

Day by Day
The Itinerary
Day 1
Arrive in Bergen
Fly in and pick up your hire car. Explore Bergen — the Bryggen waterfront, the fish market, and the Fløibanen funicular. Evening seafood dinner on the harbour.
Day 2
Bergen to Hardangerfjord
Drive east to the Hardangerfjord — Norway’s second-longest fjord. Cross by ferry and follow the shore road past orchards and waterfalls. Check in to your fjord hotel.
Day 3
Hardangerfjord to Sognefjord
Continue north to the Sognefjord — the longest and deepest fjord in Norway. Drive the Aurlandsfjellet scenic route for panoramic mountain views. Ferry crossing to your accommodation.
Day 4
Sognefjord to Geiranger
Drive north through mountain passes to the Geirangerfjord. Take the ferry into the fjord — waterfalls on both sides, sheer cliffs above. Check in to a hotel overlooking the fjord.
Day 5
Trollstigen
Drive the Trollstigen — the Troll’s Path. Eleven hairpins, cascading waterfalls, and a road that clings to the cliff face. Stop at the viewing platform at the top. Continue north along the coast.
Day 6
Atlantic Ocean Road
Drive the Atlantic Ocean Road — eight bridges between rocky islets in the open sea. One of the world’s most photogenic roads. Continue to Kristiansund or Molde.
Day 7
Coastal Driving North
Continue north along the coast. The scenery shifts from fjords to open coastline, islands, and fishing villages. Ferry crossings and tunnel diving become the rhythm of the day.
Day 8
Mountain Interior
Head inland through Norway’s mountain interior. High plateaus, reindeer, and wilderness that stretches to the horizon. A different Norway from the coastal fjords.
Day 9
Return to Bergen
Begin the drive south back towards Bergen. Choose the coastal route or the mountain route. Final evening in Bergen — dinner at Enhjørningen or Lysverket.
Day 10
