Dolomites Road Trip: Stelvio Pass & Italy’s Greatest Driving Roads
The most famous driving road in the world and the most dramatic mountain scenery in Europe.
9 days / 8 nights · From £1,049 per car based on two sharing
You’ve seen the photos. The hairpins stacked on top of each other, the snow posts marking the edge of the road, the summit sign at 2,757 metres. But nothing prepares you for actually driving the Stelvio. The car shrinks around you, the bends keep coming, and somewhere around hairpin 30 you stop counting and start grinning. It’s the most famous driving road in the world for a reason, and this trip puts it right at the centre of a week in the Alps.
The journey starts with a night in Burgundy to break the drive from the UK — dinner in a French bistro, a glass of something good, and an early start the next morning. Once you’re in the mountains, the days are built around passes: the Stelvio itself, then the Dolomites — Passo di Gavia, Passo del Tonale, the Sella Ronda loop with its four linked passes and views of the Marmolada glacier. Each one has a different character. Some are wide and flowing, others are tight and technical, all of them are unforgettable.
The trip crosses into Austria for the Grossglockner — 36 hairpins and glacier views that rival anything in Switzerland — before heading to Strasbourg and home. Nine days, eight nights, three countries, and more mountain passes than you’ll be able to count. Bring a camera with a big memory card.

Day by Day
The Itinerary
Day 1
Eurotunnel & Drive to Burgundy
Channel crossing and drive south through France to Burgundy. Arrive in the Beaune area for your first overnight — dinner along the Côte de Nuits with a glass of Pinot Noir.
Day 2
Burgundy to Northern Italy
Continue south through France, crossing into Switzerland and over the border into the Italian Alps. The mountains grow taller as you approach the Dolomites. Check in to your hotel at the foot of tomorrow’s adventure.
Day 3
Stelvio Pass Day
The main event. Drive the Stelvio Pass — 48 hairpins climbing to 2,757m, one of the highest paved roads in Europe. Coffee at the summit, then choose your return route for a completely different perspective on this legendary road.
Day 4
Dolomite Passes West
A day of western Dolomite passes. Options include the Gavia Pass (raw and exposed), the Tonale Pass, or the dramatic Spluga. Stop for lunch at a rifugio — a mountain hut serving hearty Italian Alpine food.
Day 5
Dolomite Passes East
Drive the Sella Ronda — a circuit of four spectacular Dolomite passes: Sella, Pordoi, Gardena, and Campolongo. Each pass offers a different character, with views of the Marmolada glacier and the pale limestone towers of the Dolomites.
Day 6
Into Austria
Cross into Austria for the Grossglockner High Alpine Road — 48 km and 36 hairpins climbing to 2,500m. Stop at Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe for glacier views and keep an eye out for marmots on the Alpine meadows.
Day 7
Austrian Alps Exploration
Your choice of Austrian Alpine routes — drive the Grossglockner again, explore the quiet Zillertal valley roads, or cross the Timmelsjoch back into Italy. Your route notes cover all options.
Day 8
Austria to Strasbourg
Leave the Alps behind and drive north through Germany to Strasbourg. Final evening in Alsace — tarte flambée and Riesling in a traditional winstub.
Day 9
Strasbourg to Home
