Great Swedish Cities

Sweden is the road trip you take when you want to slow down. The forests are vast and silent, the lakes reflect the sky like mirrors, and the roads are so well-maintained and so empty that driving becomes a form of meditation. This isn’t a trip about hairpin bends and mountain passes — it’s about space, light, and the quiet satisfaction of crossing a beautiful country at your own pace.

You’ll start in Stockholm, which is built across 14 islands and is genuinely one of the most beautiful capitals in Europe. The Gamla Stan old town, the Vasa Museum, the waterfront — give it two days. Then west through the Swedish countryside: the Göta Canal with its hand-operated locks, the vast Lake Vänern, the Småland glassworks where they’ve been blowing glass since the 1700s. The small towns serve coffee and cinnamon buns and close early, and somehow that’s exactly what you want.

Göteborg at the end is Volvo’s hometown and has a brilliant food scene and a fishing harbour that serves the freshest seafood you’ll eat anywhere. Six nights, two cities, and the space between them is where the magic is.
