Lingotto

The fiat Factory

You know the scene. Three Minis — red, white, blue — tearing across the rooftop of the Lingotto Factory in Turin, Michael Caine hanging out of the window, the Italian police in hopeless pursuit. This trip takes you there. Actually there. You’ll stay in the hotel that’s built into the old Fiat factory, walk the rooftop test track, and stand in the piazzas and tunnels where they filmed it. But that’s just day three. Before Turin, there’s the drive through Champagne and the French Alps. After it, there’s the Col du Nivolet, the Stelvio, the Bernina, the Julier — passes that make the film’s mountain scenes look like a warm-up.

The route is built around the film but it’s really built around the driving. The Col du Nivolet is the one they actually used for the opening sequence — a narrow, wild road climbing through the Gran Paradiso National Park. The Stelvio needs no introduction. The Bernina and Julier passes through Switzerland’s Engadin valley are among the finest roads in Europe. You’ll cross from Italy to Switzerland to Germany over three days of mountain driving that will leave you grinning and slightly exhausted. Andermatt, Bormio, Konstanz — each overnight is in a different country, a different landscape, a different mood.

The trip bookends the Alps with two cities that know how to send you off properly. Strasbourg gets two nights at the end — enough time to explore the canals and timbered houses of the Petite France quarter, do a Vosges loop if you fancy one more driving day, or simply sit with a glass of Alsatian Riesling and let the week sink in. Then it’s north through France and the Eurotunnel home. Ten days, nine nights, four countries, and the kind of trip that makes you want to watch the film again the moment you get back — except now you’ll recognise every road.

Why This Trip

What Makes It Special

The Lingotto Factory

Stay in the hotel built into Fiat’s legendary factory in Turin. The rooftop test track — where the Minis tore across in the film — is still there. Stand on it, look out across the city, and try not to hear the soundtrack in your head.

Col du Nivolet

The mountain pass from the film’s opening sequence. A narrow, dramatic road climbing through the Gran Paradiso National Park — wild, beautiful, and exactly as cinematic as it looks on screen.

The Stelvio Pass

Forty-eight hairpins climbing to 2,757 metres. The most famous driving road in the world, and a highlight of any trip through the Alps. Coffee at the summit, photos at every bend.

Five legendary passes

Col du Nivolet, Stelvio, Bernina, Julier, and more. Three days of continuous mountain driving through Italy, Switzerland, and into Germany. Each pass has a different character — all of them are exceptional.

Turin — a car city

Home of Fiat, birthplace of The Italian Job, and one of Italy’s most elegant cities. A full day to explore the filming locations, the piazzas, the arcades, and the food — Turin’s chocolate and vermouth scene is extraordinary.

Day by Day

The Itinerary

Day 1

Folkestone to Reims

Cross the Eurotunnel from Folkestone to Calais and drive south into the Champagne region. A relaxed first day — around three hours of driving — with time to explore Reims’ grand squares, visit the cathedral, or raise a glass of Champagne at one of the famous houses.

Day 2

Reims to Grenoble

Head deeper into France, trading the vineyards of Champagne for the alpine foothills around Grenoble. A longer driving day through the French countryside — watch the landscape shift from rolling farmland to the first hint of mountains.

Day 3

Grenoble to Turin

Cross into Italy and arrive in Turin — the city where The Italian Job was filmed. Check in to the Lingotto Factory Hotel — a hotel built into the old Fiat factory, with the famous rooftop test track still intact above you. Spend the afternoon exploring Turin’s elegant arcades and piazzas.

Day 4

Turin — Film Locations & Exploration

A full day in Turin dedicated to The Italian Job. Visit the filming locations — the piazzas, the tunnels, the bridges, and the rooftop of the Lingotto itself where the Minis made their famous escape. Beyond the film, Turin is one of Italy’s most underrated cities — the Egyptian Museum, the Mole Antonelliana, and extraordinary food.

Day 5

Turin to Andermatt via Col du Nivolet

The driving begins in earnest. Head out of Turin and tackle the Col du Nivolet — the pass used in the film’s opening sequence, climbing through the Gran Paradiso National Park. Wild, narrow, and spectacularly beautiful. Cross into Switzerland and continue to Andermatt.

Day 6

Andermatt to Bormio via Stelvio Pass

The headline day. Drive the legendary Stelvio Pass — 48 hairpins climbing to 2,757 metres and arguably the most famous driving road in the world. Coffee at the summit, photos at every switchback. Descend into Bormio and check in to your spa hotel. You’ve earned the hot springs tonight.

Day 7

Bormio to Konstanz via Bernina & Julier Passes

Another outstanding day in the mountains. Drive the Bernina Pass — with its glacial views and the famous Hospiz viewpoint — then the Julier Pass through the Engadin valley. Descend through eastern Switzerland and into Germany, arriving at Konstanz on the shores of Lake Constance.

Day 8

Konstanz to Strasbourg

A scenic drive through the Black Forest leads to Alsace. The roads through the forest are dense, winding, and brilliant — a final dose of proper driving before the trip winds down. Arrive in Strasbourg and check in to your hotel in the charming Petite France quarter.

Day 9

Strasbourg — Explore & Rest Day

A slower day to enjoy Strasbourg and Alsace. Explore the old town, take a canal boat ride, taste Alsatian wines, or head out for a short loop through the Vosges passes if you want one more driving fix. A relaxed final evening — tarte flambée and a cold Alsatian beer.

Day 10

Strasbourg to Folkestone

Head north through France to Calais and board the Eurotunnel back to Folkestone. A final day’s drive through the French countryside to round off ten days of filming locations, legendary passes, and some of the finest driving roads in Europe.
