The first trip of the year, and the one that shakes the winter off. Three days across the finest driving roads in Wales — from the Black Mountains to Snowdonia — while everyone else is still waiting for spring to arrive.
South first: the Gospel Pass over the Black Mountains, down into the Wye Valley at Hay, then west to the Elan Valley reservoirs. North on day two over Bwlch y Groes — the highest paved road in Wales, the climb manufacturers once used to test prototypes — across the Migneint moor and through the Llanberis Pass under Snowdon. Home on day three the fast way: the sweeping moorland roads above Denbigh, then down the Horseshoe Pass into Llangollen.
Wales in March is empty. No campervans, no coaches, nobody sitting in the passing places. Just cold air, long views, and roads you get to yourself. Two nights, two hotels we know and trust, and a route no Road Trip Co trip has run this way round before.

Why This Trip
Why March
The roads are yours.
March sits before everything. Bwlch y Groes and the Gospel Pass see almost no traffic, and the passing places are there when you need them rather than full of somebody else.
Winter light.
Low sun across the moors and the reservoirs all day. It is the best month of the year to photograph Wales — and the one nobody thinks to book.
A proper start to the year.
Most people don’t drive anything interesting between October and May. This is the weekend that ends that.
Short days by design.
Nothing over four and a half hours behind the wheel. The route is built around March daylight rather than fighting it.

Day by Day
The Itinerary
Day 1 · Fri 12 Mar
South Wales and the Gospel Pass
Meet at Abergavenny late morning and go straight up the Gospel Pass — the highest road in south Wales, single track over the Black Mountains, with the drop into the Wye Valley waiting at the far end. Lunch in Hay-on-Wye among the bookshops, then north-west through Builth Wells to the Elan Valley and its Victorian dams. Finish at Llandrindod Wells for the welcome dinner. Around 90 miles, three to three and a half hours with stops.
Day 2 · Sat 13 Mar
Bwlch y Groes and Snowdonia
The big driving day. North via Rhayader and Machynlleth to Bwlch y Groes, the highest paved road in Wales at 545 metres. Down to Bala, then the B4391 across the wide-open Migneint moor, over the Crimea Pass at Blaenau Ffestiniog, and finally the Llanberis Pass — a glacial valley between the Glyderau and the Snowdon massif. East to the Conwy Valley for dinner, bed and breakfast. Around 110 miles, four to four and a half hours with stops.
Day 3 · Sun 14 Mar
The moors, the Horseshoe Pass, and home
A short, fast final morning on roads no other trip of ours uses: the sweeping moorland above Denbigh — sightlines for miles — then the Horseshoe Pass down into Llangollen, where the trip ends. Easy access to the A5, A483 and the motorway network in every direction. Around 55 miles, two to two and a half hours. Home for Sunday dinner.

Good to Know
Is my car suitable?
Yes. All roads are paved. The Gospel Pass and Bwlch y Groes are single-track with passing places — narrow, not difficult.
What if there’s snow?
The two highest roads have signed fallback routes in the road book and the trip runs either way. March snow in Wales is photogenic and short-lived.
Where exactly do we meet?
Abergavenny, late Friday morning — exact point and time in your joining instructions. Most of England is within three hours of the start.
Can I come solo?
Yes — the solo price covers your own room both nights.
