When you’re driving in Wales it’s easy to see why it was chosen as Great Britain’s location for the World Rally Championship. The hills, valleys and lakes, wide open spaces, and large forest areas mean there’s so much to explore.
It’s easy to think about the stereotypes that Wales is all sheep and mining but is plenty to do from excursions and theme parks, to beaches and surfing, or even five star food and drink. Definitely watch out for those sheep on the road though. They really are everywhere and tend to think they own the roads.
Brecon Beacons
This should definitely be on your hit list of areas to drive in Wales and, as mentioned above, the Black Mountain pass is one of the best driving roads to put your car to the test on. At 20 miles and with 80 corners there’s plenty to get your wheels into.
Elan Valley
This is sometimes referred to as the Welsh Lake District with huge lakes and five dams. Driving the road beside the Craig Goch Dam will give you some great vantage points for scenery and some challenging driving. A place to definitely keep your wits about you.
Devil’s Staircase
North of the Brecon Beacons and south of the Elan Valley is Abergwesyn and the Abergwesyn Pass – also known as the Devil’s Staircase. This has sharp hairpins while cutting through forests and valleys.
Snowdonia
There are so many great driving roads on the way up to Snowdonia and around it. The Evo Triangle, made famous by Evo Magazine, is a must for car fans. It’s where three roads meet to create a short circuit around the area – but be warned there are plenty of police in the are (and more of those sheep).
